Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern 2/3 of the island of
Hispaniola. It was the first island Christopher Columbus established a
settlement in what was considered the New World, and his journal entries are
full of praise about the beauty of the land. Today the country is known for its
political stability, friendly people, incredible geographic variety, warm
climate, and beautiful Caribbean water.
The Dominican Republic has an average water temperature of
25-29°C/ 77-85°F. The whole year is suitable for diving.
Sosua
Sosua is a wonderful
Dominican village with distinct international flavour. Sosua has earned a
reputation for its fine hotels, delicious restaurants, and beautiful beach
excellent for swimming, snorkelling, other water sports and most important
SCUBA DIVING.. The beach itself is a genuine tourist bazaar featuring souvenir
shops, tantalizing international food and plenty of inviting bars where
piña coladas, fresh juices and Presidente beer are
commonplace. |
Things to do for the above-water
enthusiasts: |
Snorkeling
Excursions by boat: Northern Coast Diving offers daily snorkelling trips in
Sosua and in the Rio San Juan area.
|
|
Windsurfing: Heading
east, about 15 kilometers from Sosua lies Cabarete, home to numerous World Cup
and other windsurfing competitions. Windsurfing schools line the beach and are
always eager to give you a lesson or help you with equipment
rentals. |
 |
Kitesurfing: The newest
addition in watersports fun. Spectacular to watch and even more fun to do.
Cabarete is considered to be the best spots in the world to learn and practice
this exciting new sport. |
 |
Surfing:
Between Cabarete and Sosua is one of the best surfing spots on the north coast,
Playa Encuentro.
|
 |
Horseback riding: The
country's northern mountain chain creates a wall that hugs the north coast
providing excellent horseback riding trails only about fifteen minutes inland.
Many ranches also offer horseback riding on the beach.
|
 |
Mountain
Biking: Likewise for horseback riding, the mountain biking here is some of
the best in the Caribbean. For more on mountain biking click on
Iguana Mama
|
 |
Food: The dining experience
in Sosua is a genuine worldwide mix including French, Italian, Spanish, German,
Brittish and Mexican. For a taste of authentic Dominican food, nearby Los
Charamicos has dozens of family-run rice and bean type eateries where your peso
will take you far. Traditional Dominican dishes include the plantain (a
non-sweet banana), yucca dishes, rice and beans, chicken, lobster and other
seafood, and pork roasted in a pit.
Our Favourites: After more
than 18 years of eating out in Sosua, we here at Northern Coast Aquasports have
quite a few favourites. Some of which are:
- Rocky's Blues Bar
- La Roca Restaurant
- Restaurant Sosua by the
Sea
- On the Waterfront
(international cuisine)
- Brittania Pub
- Joseph's Grill and Grape
- Checkpoint bar
- Irish Pub Jose O'Shay
- Morua Mai (seafood
restaurant)
- and visit us at our very own snack
bar "Safety Stop" on the premises and meet other divers.

Shopping: Amber
jewelery, Larimar (Dominican Turquoise), and other local crafts like wooden
statues and ceramics are popular and plentiful in the area. Sosua Beach has
great variety and cheap prices for the bargain hunter.
|
Nightlife: The
Dominican Republic gave the world the Merengue, a contagious Latin song and
dance that embodies a people and culture with an uncontested zest for life.
Sosua, although fairly small in size, has some of the best discotheques on the
north coast. |
